Fuel shortages
18th March 2026
Australia is experiencing diesel shortages due to its dependence on imported fuel and recent global supply disruptions, especially from Middle East tensions. Although the government says national reserves exceed the minimum, supplies are limited by international standards and unevenly distributed, particularly in regional areas.
Through ACGC’s membership to the National Farmers’ Federation, real-time information from growers is being shared with the decision makers in Canberra.
For Australian farmers, the effects are significant. Chicken growers are increasingly reporting that these geopolitical challenges are causing noticeable strain across the industry. Even brief disruptions can have far-reaching consequences along the poultry meat supply chain, affecting every stage from the hatchery right through to the consumer.
Higher prices drive up input costs and cash-flow pressure for farms already facing income challenges. Growers caution that continued uncertainty over diesel supply threatens both farm viability and Australia's food security, impacting freight and processing.
